History

From CS-Quakers

Compared to many historic Quaker meetings in New Jersey, Chatham Summit Quaker Meeting is fairly young. Our beautiful meeting house was completed as recently as 1970 and partially renovated in 2007. Our roots, however, go back to the 1920s in Montclair Friends Meeting. Gasoline shortages during WWII limited travel from our area to Montclair giving rise to a new Quaker meeting. At first we met in churches and the YWCA in Summit (thus our original name, Summit Monthly Meeting), but in 1965 we acquired land in Chatham Township and built a new meeting house in 1970.

Here are some highlights of our history:

2007-2008 Construction of meeting house addition
Post 9/11/2001 Eyes Wide Open boots exhibit
1988 Our part in US-Soviet Cooperative Bering Sea Search
1985 Panels we made for a Peace Ribbon around the Pentagon
1970 Building of meeting house
1955-6 Hiroshima Maidens
1940s Started Meeting for Worship in Summit NJ
1920s Original members attending Montclair Monthly Meeting
