Duties of the Library Committee

The meeting historian, who is also part of the committee, maintains general meeting records and archives.

Specifically, the committee:

  • Maintains an online catalog of library holdings
  • Oversees the circulation of items, sending out regular reminders of items that have been checked out and due dates
  • Attempts to retrieve or arrange for replacement of books that have been charged out longer than the agreed-upon loan period
  • Orders new items
  • Participates in the selection of items to be purchased through the Moser Fund
  • Conducts periodic inventories of the collection
  • Makes determinations of items which should be discarded from the collection
  • Keeps the library shelves in order
  • Promotes the collection through displays, reviews, reading lists, etc.
  • Accounts for expenditures from the library budget
  • Prepares regular committee reports

The meeting historian:

  • Sends one copy of the minutes of each business meeting to the Swarthmore Quaker archives, files one copy in the meeting’s archival boxes, and places one copy in a binder in the library for ready access
  • Sends one copy of the meeting’s newsletter to the Swarthmore Quaker archives and places one copy in a binder in the library
